ABOUT ME
11/07/2012: It had been my personal policy to keep Homeschool College USA completely ad-free, to make sure all visitors understood I did not create this site with the intention of promoting certain businesses for my own financial gain; but rather, I wanted to help other families working within a limited budget, as ours does.
Earlier this year, the IRS announced that all business employees who work 30 hours or more per week would be considered full-time when evaluated in terms of Obamacare. The obvious and expected reaction followed. Many companies, including the one my husband works for, cut their employee hours and shifts to less than 30 hours a week. (You can find stories regarding this situation from various news providers, though it did not, in my opinion, get nearly the attention from the media that it deserved.) For us, this meant a loss of income of about $700 per month. There are families out there, I am sure, who could weather a blow like that, but we are not one of them. When the College Board approached me about the possibility of advertising here on HC USA, I accepted the offer. Obviously, this won't totally offset our drop in income, but every little bit helps.
As the main goal of HC USA is to help families with finding free curriculum sources for high school, while also using college-level testing to drastically reduce the amount of money they spend on higher education, if you are looking for more information regarding CLEP testing, please consider clicking any of the College Board banners on this site. It will not cost you anything, but it will help me by sending traffic to their site.
I appreciate your understanding in this matter.
~Jennifer
Or see ABOUT HC USA.
Hello.
I'm Jennifer Farrell, a homeschooling mom in Florida with two teens who are working to earn their degrees through Thomas Edison State College. While occasionally my family pitches in to help me here, for the most part, this is a one-woman show. I do my best to check the links periodically and make sure everything is good to go, but I'm not always going to catch everything immediately. Please be patient with me!
My family has been homeschooling for many years. My son attended a private Christian school for K - 1st. He and his sister then attended a public school for his second grade year while she completed kindergarten, and that was the end of it. We kept them home after that and haven't looked back or ever regretted it even once. My children have grown into amazing young people and their father and I couldn't be more proud of them.
Despite the myth that homeschooling is only for "those affluent families who can afford to have mom stay at home," my personal experience has been anything but. In fact, the affluent families I know who don't want their children to attend public school instead pay for expensive private school options. We homeschoolers are generally families who live below (and often well below) the national median income level, and so we have to be exceedingly creative when it comes to putting together our curriculum and materials.
HC USA exists solely because I want to help other homeschooling families on the same limited budget that our family works with. This site is free and everything I link to is free. My primary goal is not now nor has it ever been to make money off you through HC USA. What I want - what I have always wanted - is for any family desiring to take advantage of the many opportunities afforded by homeschooling to be able to do so, even without a big budget behind them. I want you to enjoy the same success that our family has enjoyed.
A special thanks goes out to those of you who have "liked" this site on Facebook or linked to it in your blogs and forums. I appreciate the help with spreading the word.
Although this website is dedicated to education and working toward a college degree, I would like to offer this final thought, in the form of a quote:
"Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love." ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
If you find you have benefited in some way from this website, please pay it forward.
